Valeriana officinalis L.
Valerian is a perennial plant with delicate whitish-pink flowers and a sturdy rootstock. The underground parts of the plant are used; when dried, they develop their characteristic intense aroma.
Valerian is one of the best-known European medicinal plants for treating sleep disorders and nervous tension. Preparations made from valerian root are traditionally used to treat mild nervous restlessness and sleep problems.

Valerian develops an erect, usually unbranched stem. The opposite leaves are imparipinnate and consist of several narrow leaflets.
The small, whitish to pale pink flowers grow in dense, branched inflorescences. They are visited by numerous insects.
Underground, the plant forms a short rootstock with numerous fine roots. These underground parts are cleaned after harvest and, depending on their intended use, are either processed fresh or dried.
