Green Oats / Oats

Avena sativa L.

Oats are an annual cereal crop belonging to the grass family. While mature oat grains are primarily used as food, the term “green oats” refers to the young above-ground parts of the plant that are harvested before or at the beginning of flowering.

Preparations made from oat straw are traditionally used to relieve mild nervous tension and to promote sleep.

Profile

  • German name: Oats, Oat Seeds, Green Oats
  • Botanical name: Avena sativa L.
  • Family: Grasses (Poaceae)
  • Plant type: Annual cereal crop
  • Height: About 60 to 150 centimeters
  • Flowering season: Usually June through August
  • Parts of the plant used: Young greens and ripe fruits or grains
  • Special feature: Use as a food and as a traditional medicinal plant

Oats produce upright, hollow stalks with long, narrow leaves. Unlike wheat or barley, they do not bear a compact ear, but rather a loosely branched panicle.

The spikelets, from which the oat grains develop, are attached to the slender panicle branches. The grains are surrounded by protective husks, which are removed during processing.

For green oats, the young above-ground parts of the plant are harvested before the grains are fully developed and ripe.
