Malpighia emarginata DC.
Acerola is a tropical fruit that is particularly known for its high natural vitamin C content. The small, bright red fruits resemble cherries in appearance, but are not botanically related to them.
Because the fruits are very delicate and spoil quickly after harvest, they are often processed into juice, fruit puree, concentrate, or powder.

The acerola grows as a densely branched shrub or small tree. Its evergreen leaves are arranged oppositely and are oval to elongated in shape.
The small flowers consist of five pink to reddish petals. These develop into round, slightly flattened drupes. As they ripen, their color changes from green to orange to a deep red.
These thin-skinned fruits have soft, juicy flesh and usually contain several small pits. They can be harvested several times a year when weather conditions are favorable.
